WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
Initially when I first started taking pictures I found inspiration by viewing the works of great artists such as Ansel Adams, Edward and Brett Weston in particular. Today I find inspiration by getting out and capturing new images, viewing other works of photography and art that move me, and occasionally working with others in photography workshops to learn new approaches and techniques. Continually learning and growing as an artist inspires me. I also subscribe to a couple of publications -Lenswork and Outdoor Photographer. I always find something inspiring in them that motivates me to keep working at my craft.

DID YOU STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PHOTOGRAPHING?
I began learning photography when I was 14. When I turned 17 I bought a 4”x5” view film camera and shot landscape for many years. I read Ansel Adam’s books and took a few photography classes in high school. In college I earned a BS in Film and TV Production, and later ended up pursuing commercial still photography as my main profession. I assisted several top commercial product photographers in Los Angeles for over 10 years, and eventually free lanced in Los Angeles as a commercial photographer myself. For the last 10 years I’ve been working as a staff photographer at Kohls Inc. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I also continue to purse my nature and landscape photography full time on the side.
DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR OTHER STARTING PHOTOGRAPHERS?
When starting out, it’s a good idea to take a couple of workshops with photographers who inspire you. I’ve taken several over the years. You will learn invaluable information in a condensed period of time and save yourself a lot of struggle. Then, with new skills in hand, shoot what really inspires “speaks” to you most importantly. Venture beyond imitating others, and shoot what really inspires/speaks to you. Eventually you will find your own vision and style. Remember there is no easy route. If you want to be great at anything, it will take hours and years of investment! So be patient with your self! Enjoy the journey and realize there will highs and lows.
