WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?

When I first started taking pictures, I found inspiration by viewing great artists such as Ansel Adams, Edward, and Brett Weston in particular. Today I find inspiration by capturing new images, viewing other works of photography that inspire me, and occasionally working with others in photography workshops to learn new approaches and techniques. I also subscribe to a couple of publications, Lenswork and Outdoor Photographer. I always find something inspiring in them that motivates me to keep working at my craft.

DID YOU STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PHOTOGRAPHING?

I began learning photography when I was 14. When I turned 17, I bought a 4" x5" view film camera and shot landscape for many years. I read Ansel Adam's books and took a few photography classes in high school. I earned a BS in Film and TV Production and later pursued commercial still photography as my primary profession. I assisted several top commercial product photographers in Los Angeles for over ten years and eventually freelanced in Los Angeles as a commercial photographer myself. For the last eleven years, I've been working as a full-time product photographer at Kohls Inc. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Currently, I am a Lead Creative Photographer at Kohler Inc. in Sheboygan, WI. I also continue to pursue my nature and landscape photography on the side.

DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR OTHER STARTING PHOTOGRAPHERS?

It's a good idea to take a couple of workshops with photographers who inspire you when starting. I've taken several over the years. You will learn invaluable information in a condensed period and save yourself a lot of struggle. Then, with new skills in hand, shoot what inspires "speaks" to you most importantly. Venture beyond imitating others, pursue your own vision. Remember, there is no easy route, and it will take hours, weeks and years of investment. So be patient with yourself! Enjoy the journey and realize there will be highs and lows, but that’s part of the process.
